Education-wise, Musk graduated from Pretoria Boys High School in South Africa, having attended Waterkloof House Preparatory School, Bryanston High School, and Pretoria Boys High School. Despite being a good but not exceptional student, he strategically applied for a Canadian passport through his mother, ultimately facilitating his immigration to the United States. His educational journey included stints at the University of Pretoria and Queen's University before completing degrees in physics and economics from the University of Pennsylvania, albeit with discrepancies in the year of completion. Throughout his academic pursuits, Musk displayed entrepreneurial inclinations, organizing events to fund his education and devising innovative business plans.
In 2002, eBay purchased PayPal for $1.5 billion. Musk utilized $100 million of his earnings to establish SpaceX, a spaceflight services company. He became an early investor in Tesla Motors (now Tesla, Inc.) in 2004, eventually assuming roles as chairman, product architect, and CEO. His ventures also involved the creation of SolarCity in 2006, later acquired by Tesla, and the proposal of a high-speed transportation system known as the hyperloop in 2013. Additionally, Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, Neuralink—a neurotechnology company—and The Boring Company for tunnel construction in subsequent years. Notably, in 2022, he acquired Twitter for $44 billion, incorporating it into the newly formed X Corp., rebranding the service as X in the following year, and establishing xAI, an artificial intelligence company, in March 2023.
